Pirandai has been used as a medicinal plant since antiquity. Pirandai is considered as a versatile medicinal plant in both Ayurvedic and modern drug development areas for its valuable medicinal uses. Pirandai / Cissus quadrangularis has been used in classical ayurveda to heal broken bones, injured ligaments and tendons. It is referred as “Asthisanhari” in Sanskrit, “hadjod” in Hindi because of its ability to join bones and commonly known as the “bone setter” in English. It is an edible plant; the stems are made into curries, chutneys and eaten in Southern parts of India
