Nardostachys Jatamansi (also called Jatamansi in Hindi and Spikenard in English) belongs to the family Valerianaceae. It has been traditionally used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine as a neuroprotective agent for the treatment of hysteria, epilepsy, insomnia, and convulsions. The rhizome extract of this plant has been studied for its beneficial effect on the nervous system. It is also known to possess an antidepressant activity that helps in the management of psychological disorders like depression, anxiety disorders, mental fatigue, panic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Jatamansi, also known as “tapaswani” in Ayurveda, is a perennial, dwarf, hairy, herbaceous and endangered plant species. It acts as a brain tonic and helps to improve memory and brain functions by preventing cell damage due to its antioxidant property. It also calms down the brain and manages anxiety as well as insomnia.
